He was originally named Pi; later he took his style name Cheng-ming for his given name. Wen Cheng-ming excelled in all the literati arts: poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting. He studied painting with Shen Chou and became one of the Four Masters of the Ming. “View From the Riverside” presents a panoramic vista of both banks of a river. Trees, cottages and villagers are all included. Boats dock on the sandy banks and furl their sails. Such a scene certainly seems able to transport us to Kiang-nan on a spring day. The brushwork and composition have been worked without pretension, and the effort has succeeded admirably.
